105)VIII. James K. Megibben was born May 15, 1844, in Neville,
Ohio,and there spent his childhood days, receiving his
primaryeducation in the schools of the vicinity of his home. On
the 20day of March, 1855, he left his native state, and joined
hisbrothers in Harrison County, Ky. There he pursued his studies
inone session in Mount Vernon Seminary.During the late war, he
served in the confederate army. He ispresident of the Edgewater
Thoroughbred Excelsior Co. – TheExcelsior Distillery, TJ
Megibben and Bro., Lair, Kentucky havingbeen turned into a
corporation after the death of T.J. and styled“The Megibben
Excelsior Company.” He is vice president of theMegibben-
Sharp Distilling Company., and one of the associategovernors of
the Latonia Association, of Covington, Kentucky. Hefarms on an
extensive scale, and is well known among the turffraternity.He
was married June 20,1866, in Cynthiana, Kentucky, to MaryShawhan,
who was born at the above named place, April 22, 1845.They
located in Cynthiana, where they have since continued
toreside.James and Mary (Shawhan) Megibben had eight children,
all born inHarrison County, Ky., as follows:1.John William born
May 19, 1867.2.Shawhan born Feb. 3, 1869.3.Charles Kimbrough born
July 25, 1870.4.Lela May born Sept. 21, 1872; died Jan. 14,
1892.5.Lizzie Lawrence born July 10, 1877.6.Thomas Jefferson born
Aug. 9, 1881.7.James Keller born April 26, 1884.8.Joseph Todd,

Mt. Vernon Seminary, worked in the distillery of JohnShawhan and
after married to his daughter. He went and built adistillery with
his father-in-law J.T. Shawhan near StampingGround in Scott
County, Kentucky in 1868. He and his brother T.J.Megibben went
into partnership and built the distrillery known as'Excelsior No.
38'. He also had a Flouring Mill at Lair'sStation, Kentucky (7
miles west of Connersville and 8 miles eastof Sadieville on
Cynthiana Pike), plus farmed 350 acres and builta brick residence
there at Lair's Station Pike and theK.C.Railroad. He was a
Democrat, member of the order of A.F. &A.M. at Cynthiana,

1889Kentucky Derby, named Sportsman, finished 6th, jockey was
IsaacLewis. Horse Farm was 'J.K. Megibben & Company' . He was
also part owner with his brotherT.J. Megibben of the Horse Farm
'Megibben-Edgewater' stud farm.James was in the Confederate Army,
1st Regiment, KentuckyInfantry, Company C. as a Private and 2nd
Regiment, KentuckyCavalry (Duke's) as a Private both on Film
#M377 roll #9 ofConfederate Munster Records. In 1860 census was
living with hiseldest brother as his farm hand (brother was
spelling the nameMcGibbin and mother had spelled it the same in
1850 Ohio census).
